What Is SR-22 Insurance and Do You Need It?

What Are SR-22 and FR-44 Certificates?

First, an important clarification: an SR-22 or FR-44 is not an insurance policy. It is a certificate of financial responsibility that your insurance company files electronically with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) on your behalf. The certificate confirms that you carry the minimum liability coverage required by the state.

In other words, you still need an underlying auto insurance policy — the SR-22 or FR-44 is simply the proof of that coverage filed with the state.

SR-22: When Is It Required?

In Florida, you may be required to file an SR-22 after:

The minimum liability coverage required under an SR-22 in Florida is $10,000 per person / $20,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $10,000 for property damage.

FR-44: Florida's Higher Standard After a DUI

The FR-44 is unique to Florida and Virginia. It functions like an SR-22, but it is required specifically after a DUI or DWI conviction and comes with significantly higher liability requirements:

Because of these higher limits, FR-44 policies are typically more expensive than standard SR-22 filings.

Important: Both SR-22 and FR-44 filings must generally be maintained for three consecutive years in Florida. If your policy lapses or is cancelled during that period, your insurer is required to notify the state, and your license may be suspended again.

What About Non-Owner Policies?

If you don't own a vehicle but still need to drive legally, a non-owner SR-22 policy allows you to meet the state's filing requirement without insuring a specific car. This is a common and affordable option for people in this situation.

How Do You Get Filed?

The process is straightforward. You work with a licensed insurance agent — like Muina Insurance Group LLC — who finds you a qualifying policy and then files the SR-22 or FR-44 certificate electronically with the DHSMV on your behalf. The filing fee is typically between $15 and $50, paid once.
